"We are a young punk band from Hervey Bay, QLD called Sagnar, consisting of Roman (14), Max (14), and Kye (13)."
If you're thinking the same thing as I am, then you know how tough it is to be our age in the music industry yet Hervey Bay up-and-comers Sagnar are putting us all to shame with their second single, 'Aliens Exist'. Aiming to "hit it big and play alongside Pennywise, and Frenzal Rhomb, their sound precedes their own ages with influences among NOFX and Bigwig. We had a chat to figure out the biggest challenges of being a group of three young people from a rural area with limited live arts support and what keeps them motivated.
Congratulations on the announcement of a second single! How has the reception been for the first so far?
Pretty wild actually - we didn't really think many people would get into it except our mums, lol. But it turns out people actually know the words, and it's epic to have people yelling encore when we play it live.
The new single, 'Aliens Exist', is clearly signalling something. Where did the idea come from in the writing room?
The idea came from us mucking around in the band room, talking about aliens taking over the world and how crazy it would be if they did take over and what life would be like.
Obviously there has to be room for the day one supporters. Who's helped you out on this release journey so far?
100% our families. If it wasn't for our biggest supporters, our parents, helping us chase our dreams, from buying our gear to driving us all over Queensland for gigs, plus us jamming nearly every day, and also Tim Johnson from XFIRE Music who took us into the studio and showed us the ropes of recording our songs and how the industry works.
Being a band of three young people coming up outside of the cities wouldn't be without its challenges - has everything been easy to overcome so far?
Definitely hasn't been easy living in regional Queensland. There are fewer venues and fewer chances, especially being how young we are, but we have been fortunate to have met people like Tim from XFIRE Music and Andrew from East Coast Alternative who gave us a chance on the stage and helped us grow our following and stage presence. Plus, getting to meet so many epic bands and really cool people.
Sagnar has been spotted on several lineups this year in the north Queensland punk/hardcore scene. How have you found the stage experience so far in your career?
Playing live is the best part. Being up on stage, you get to control the chaos - circle pits, singalongs, just getting everyone pumped is epic. The 'Punks Not Dead' tour up north was unreal, and we can't wait for the next one.
